SWARTLAND SPORT FESTIVAL, BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER

The organisation of the third annual Swartland Municipality Sports and Recreation Festivalis well underway. This year, the festival will take place in Moorreesburg and will include even more activities than in previous years.

For the first time since the festival’s inception, soccer will be included. There is also a special focus on indigenous games such as klawerjas and dominoes.

The festival will stretch over two days and will consist of rugby (women and men), netball, and soccer tournaments. The rugby competition will include four (4) women’s teams and fourteen (14) men’s teams affiliated with the Boland Rugby Union. Eight clubs affiliated with the West Coast Netball Union will participate in the netball tournament, while eight soccer teams affiliated with the Swartland Football Association will also take part. All participating clubs are based within the Swartland Municipal boundaries.

The primary purpose of the sports festival is to create a positive environment where communities can reconnect, foster a sense of togetherness, and strengthen social cohesion. By bringing diverse communities together, the event aims to create a welcoming family-day atmosphere. Sport serves as a powerful catalyst for achieving these objectives, given the strong participation and support these sporting codes enjoy within Swartland.

The 2026 festival will also include a children’s play park and a carnival area for both children and adults. These recreational facilities will be managed by appointed service providers from within the Swartland community, as well as SA Bumper Rides, thereby contributing to local economic participation.

The event is expected to attract communities from all eleven towns within the Swartland Municipal area. In addition to competitive sport, the festival will also celebrate Swartland’s rich sporting heritage. Several international sporting stars across these codes were born and raised in Swartland, and the Municipality intends to pay tribute to these national heroes during the event.
