SWARTLAND MUNICIPALITY HOSTS THIRD ANNUAL SMME INDABA

On Friday, 17 April 2026, Swartland Municipality hosted its third annual SMME Indaba at the Malmesbury Town Hall. The SMME (Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises) Indaba brings together entrepreneurs and key stakeholders to foster networks of support, collaboration, and business growth.

This annual event has become an important platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services, while gaining access to valuable resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities.

Executive Mayor Harold Cleophas reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive local economy. “SMMEs are the driving force behind a resilient and inclusive economy. They are the risk-takers, innovators and job creators,” said Mayor Cleophas during his keynote address.

The Swartland SMME Indaba continues to serve as a reliable platform for meaningful dialogue, partnerships, and business development. As part of Swartland’s vision of being a forward-thinking municipality where people can live their dreams, the event aims to strengthen support networks for local businesses.

These efforts are made possible through strong partnerships across sectors, including the main sponsor, Standard Bank, as well as the Malmesbury Business Chamber, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), and the Western Cape Government.

This year’s event featured entrepreneurs from a range of sectors, including technology and IT, food, services, and media. A total of 25 SMMEs applied to participate in the Indaba. As part of the selection process, applicants pitched their business ideas to a panel comprising representatives from Standard Bank, the Malmesbury Business Chamber, and Swartland Municipality. Following this process, 18 participants took part in the Indaba, with seven businesses chosen to deliver two-minute pitches to attendees.

Based on these presentations, the panel selected five winners across various categories:

  • • Special Recognition Awards were presented to Atlantic Energy SA and Sona Sodwa General Trading for their strong growth potential. Each business received R25 000 from Standard Bank to support their development.
  • • The Positive Community Impact Award was awarded to Ndiyazazi – I Am Enough in recognition of its meaningful contribution to uplifting and empowering the community. The business received R50 000 from Standard Bank.
  • • The Best Business Growth Award, along with a R50 000 prize from Standard Bank, was awarded to MJ Cleaning Services.
  • • The Best Innovation Award went to Swartland Technology, which also received R50 000 to further invest in its business.

Each year, the SMME Indaba continues to evolve as a valuable learning experience for both participants and the Municipality as host. As the event grows, Swartland Municipality remains grateful for the partnerships that have been built over the past three years. A special thank you to the Municipality’s banking partner, Standard Bank who has given exceptional support and has made meaningful contributions to economic development in the Swartland.
