Reduce – Recycle – Re-use:
Residents of the Swartland are requested to assist the municipality in its attempts to increase the recycling of refuse in its area. Sixty-six igloo recycling containers for the recycling of tin/glass, paper/cardboard and plastics have been erected at – as a start – 16 drop-off sites in the Swartland. Recyclable items are taken from here to the Highlands landfill site, where it is baled and delivered to firms such as Consol and Mondi. View list of drop-off sites.

Stars in their Eyes
On 23 June 2010 Malmesbury in the Swartland played host to a special initiative sponsored by benefactors from the Netherlands.
Some 250 local children participated in the day’s activities which included coaching in soccer and life skills. Prizes were awarded for top talent and three soccer players were identified for future coaching. The attendees shared a healthy breakfast and lunch prepared by five Michelin chefs in the so-called Culibus, a professional kitchen that was shipped from the Netherlands to South Africa for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The party was welcomed by the Executive Mayor, alderman Tijmen van Essen, who relocated from the Netherlands to South Africa in 1973. Also present was mr Sakkie Jenner, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs, Sport and Recreation and mr Joop Pinckaers, former member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and a Malmesbury resident since 1996. The latter was recently awarded by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands with the Ridder Orde van Oranje Nassau for his achievements with the Elkana Child Care project in Malmesbury.

De Telegraaf, a Netherlands daily, also reported on the matter. View this article and photo’s.
